As part of a larger reuse project within a former convent in Montreal, curatorial collective Nouveau Milieu commissioned a series of design objects repurposed from the building’s church pews, presented during Montreal Design Week.

As one of fourteen designers selected for the Matière Sensible exhibition, I chose to transform the church pews into a reading desk. The pews were originally made for collective sitting, but here that condition shifts. The stillness and introspection tied to them remain, while sitting moves from something prescribed and communal toward something more personal and self-directed.
